Pick a sauna (or type its watts and volts) and the size of your main breaker. The panel check works out the current the sauna draws, 125 % of that current, which is how the National Electrical Code sizes a circuit for a load that runs for hours, and the share of your service it takes. Then it shows what the maker itself asks for, word for word, and flags the cases where the two disagree.

Licensed electrician, the maker's manual, your local code. A sauna heater is a large, long-running load in a hot, sometimes wet room. A licensed electrician sizes and installs the circuit, from the manual of the exact heater you buy and the edition of the code your town has adopted, and pulls the permit where one is required. Nothing on this page is a wiring method.
The arithmetic, and where it comes from
- Current = watts / volts. A 6,000 W heater at 240 V draws 25 A [calc].
- 125 %. For a branch circuit, the breaker "must not be less than 100% of the non-continuous plus 125% of the continuous loads" (NEC 210.20(A), as quoted by IAEI Magazine; 210.19(A)(1) says the same for the conductors). A continuous load is "one that can be expected to operate three hours or more" (NEC Article 100, as quoted by EC&M). Whether a sauna counts as continuous is for your electrician and inspector, so we show the figure, not a verdict.
- Share of your service = current / main breaker. A 240 V sauna draws its current on both legs of the panel. This is not a load calculation: your electrician adds up everything else the house already draws.

Where the makers and the 125 % figure part ways
For a 6 kW heater, 125 % of the current is 31.25 A, yet Almost Heaven, Redwood Outdoors and Sun Home (Nova 3) list 30 A, while Sweat Kingdom lists 40 A with 8/3 wire. For 9 kW, 125 % is 46.9 A: Almost Heaven lists 45 A, Redwood Outdoors and Sweat Kingdom 50 A [calc]. We do not know why each maker chose its figure, and it is not our call. Read the heater manual, and let the electrician decide.

Frequently asked questions
What size breaker do I need for a 6 kW sauna heater?
6,000 W at 240 V is 25 A [calc]; 125 % of that is 31.25 A [calc]. The makers we read do not all agree: Almost Heaven and Redwood Outdoors list 30 A for 6 kW, Sun Home asks for a 30 A circuit for its 6 kW Nova 3, and Sweat Kingdom asks for a 40 A breaker and 8/3 wire for the 6 kW heater on The Ridge. Follow the manual of the heater you buy; your electrician sizes the circuit.
What size breaker for an 8 kW or 9 kW heater?
8,000 W at 240 V is 33.3 A, 125 % is 41.7 A; 9,000 W is 37.5 A, 125 % is 46.9 A [calc]. Almost Heaven lists 40 A for 8 kW and 45 A for 9 kW; Redwood Outdoors 40 A for 8 kW and 50 A for 9 kW; Sweat Kingdom 50 A and 6/3 wire for its 9 kW Homecraft heater.
Does a sauna need a dedicated circuit?
Almost every maker we read asks for one, including for 120 V infrared cabins: Sun Home's take a dedicated 20 A circuit with GFCI protection, Peak Saunas asks for a dedicated breaker on its Mini and Crown. The exception: Peak says its Rainier and Shasta need "no electrician, no dedicated circuit". See our guide to dedicated circuits.
What wire gauge does a sauna need?
Only one maker in our check prints the wire on the product page: Sweat Kingdom, 8/3 for its 6 kW heater on a 40 A breaker and 6/3 for its 9 kW heater on 50 A. For the others the heater manual gives it. Wire size depends on the breaker, the length of the run and the insulation type, which is why we leave it to your electrician.
