"Plug and play" is printed on many sauna pages; the plug is not always the one in your wall. Of the 116 saunas we read, 22 are sold as plug-in at 120 V, all infrared, and they ask for four different things: a standard 15 A outlet, a 20 A outlet on its own circuit, a 20 A circuit with GFCI protection, or a 30 A twist-lock outlet. The table gives the exact outlet and circuit each maker names, and the current the sauna draws.

How we compare

Reading the outlet

At 120 V, a 2,000 W cabin draws about 16.7 A; 125 % of that is 20.8 A, a little over 20 A [calc]. The makers of these cabins still ask for a 20 A circuit, which is one more reason to read the manual and let the electrician decide; the panel check runs the arithmetic for any model.

No extension cords, no adapters. Sunlighten's spec sheets tell owners to "plug sauna directly into wall outlet; not a power strip, extension cord or converter". If you need a new circuit, a licensed electrician installs it, following the maker's manual and your local code.

The running cost of a 120 V cabin is small: see the cost calculator. For all 116 saunas, the home sauna comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can you plug a sauna into a regular outlet?

A few infrared cabins, yes. In our check, Peak Saunas' Mini, Crown, Rainier and Shasta use a standard NEMA 5-15 plug, SaunaBox's Solara 1-Person a standard 110 V outlet, and Sunlighten's portable Solo a 5-15. Most other 120 V models need a 20 A NEMA 5-20 outlet on a dedicated circuit, and Sun Home's Eclipse 2 a 30 A twist-lock. No traditional sauna in our check runs on 120 V.

What is a NEMA 5-20 outlet?

A 120 V, 20 A receptacle: it looks like a household outlet with one slot shaped like a T. A 5-20 plug does not fit a standard 15 A outlet, on purpose. Most 120 V cabins in our check ship with one and ask for a dedicated 20 A circuit.

Is there a 120 V traditional sauna?

Not in our check: every traditional heater we read, from 3.5 kW (SaunaBox Forge) to 10.5 kW, is 240 V. A 3.5 kW heater at 120 V would draw 29 A [calc], more than a household circuit carries.

Do I still need an electrician for a plug-in sauna?

Often, yes. If you have no free 20 A circuit with a 5-20 outlet where the sauna goes, an electrician adds one. Sun Home also asks for GFCI protection on its 120 V cabins.
