A barrel sauna is a ring of staves held by steel bands, lying on cradles, and one of the most common backyard saunas sold in the U.S. We read 23 barrels from two makers on November 7, 2026. Each price is the cheapest in-stock version with an electric heater, which is named, because the heater changes both the price and the breaker.

The heater sets the circuit
Almost Heaven prints a line such as "6kW, 240V, 30-amp requirement, hard-wire connect" on each barrel: 30 A for 6 kW, 40 A for 8 kW, 45 A for 9 kW. Redwood Outdoors lists 30 A for 6 kW, 40 A for 8 kW and 50 A for 9 kW. A 6 kW heater draws 25 A at 240 V and 8 kW draws 33.3 A [calc]; the panel check puts those next to the 125 % NEC figure. An outdoor run adds trenching or conduit and an outdoor disconnect where your code asks for one: get the electrician's quote before you order.
What it costs to heat a barrel
A 6 kW heater run 60 minutes to heat and 30 minutes in use draws at most 9 kWh, about $1.63 at the U.S. average of 18.16 cents per kWh; an 8 kW heater, 12 kWh, about $2.18 [calc]. Winter outdoors takes longer to heat than Harvia's "about an hour", so add minutes in the cost calculator.
Before you order
- Space: the length you see in the table includes the canopy or porch on models that have one. Check the yard with will it fit (ceiling set to 0).
- Base: firm, level, drained; follow the maker's site plan and cradle spacing.
- Local rules: setbacks, permits and HOA rules vary by town. Ask before the crate arrives.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an outdoor barrel sauna cost?
In our check, from $4,485 (Almost Heaven Salem 2-Person, rustic red cedar, glass door, 6 kW heater with dials) to $12,357 (Almost Heaven Evander, Harvia Collection) on November 7, 2026. Redwood Outdoors' 6-person barrel with a 6 kW Harvia KIP heater was $5,299. Prices include the heater named in the table, not delivery, the base or the electrician.
What size heater does a barrel sauna need?
The makers pick it: Almost Heaven fits 6 kW to its 2-person barrels and to some 4-person ones (Pinnacle, Charleston), 8 kW to most of its larger barrels, Redwood Outdoors fits 6 kW to its 6-person barrels and 8 kW to the 8-person. Harvia, which makes many of these heaters, adds that log walls heat slowly and the room volume "should be multiplied by 1.5" when sizing a heater for a log sauna.
Does a barrel sauna need electricity?
An electric heater does: every electric barrel we read is 240 V, hardwired, on a 30 to 50 A breaker depending on the heater. Wood-burning heaters exist (Almost Heaven offers an M3 wood-burning kit on some models), but this site compares electric versions only.
Can I put a barrel sauna on grass?
Check the maker's site plan: barrels sit on cradles and need a firm, level, drained base. Almost Heaven prints its cradle dimensions on each page (54 x 6 in on the Salem).
